The Power of Presence: Leading with Confidence and Connection
What does it look like when a woman walks into a high-pressure negotiation and owns the room — without raising her voice, without performing confidence, without becoming someone she’s not? A current hostage negotiation team lead and a former hostage negotiator turned realtor will show you. They’ve spent their careers staying calm when everything around them wasn’t — and they’ll teach you how to carry that same presence into every conversation, every deal, and every room where it matters.
How to project authority and calm in high-pressure conversations — without changing who you are
How to navigate the moments that make deals fall apart — and keep the relationship intact on the other side
Why scripts fail in the moments that matter most — and what trained negotiators rely on instead when the pressure is real and there’s no playbook to follow.
ABOUT MARCELLA
Marcella Oakley brings a rare and powerful combination of experience to the world of negotiation, leadership, and real estate. A former detective and hostage negotiator in the Washington, DC area, Marcella spent years operating in high-stakes environments where trust, emotional intelligence, and precise communication were essential.
Trained as a forensic interviewer, she specialized in investigating crimes against children—work that required deep listening, emotional regulation, and the ability to navigate complex human dynamics under pressure.
In 2013, Marcella transitioned into real estate, applying these same negotiation and human-behavior skills to guide clients through one of the most consequential decisions of their lives.
She is the co-founder and team lead of The Oakley Group, which she runs alongside her husband, Will Oakley, a former homicide detective. Together, they have built one of the top-performing real estate teams in the Northern Virginia/DMV area by doing things differently—leading with empathy, strategic listening, and disciplined negotiation rather than scripts or sales tactics.
Marcella is a former coach with The Black Swan Group, where she trained and coached professionals across multiple industries in advanced negotiation, communication, and decision-making under pressure.
Drawing from real-world hostage negotiation experience, she now speaks and coaches independently, helping professionals translate trust-based negotiation principles into practical tools they can apply immediately—whether in business, leadership, or high-stakes interpersonal conversations.
Her work has been widely recognized. The Oakley Group has been named a Top Producer by Arlington Magazine, an Elite Producer by Washingtonian and Northern Virginia Magazine, and was featured in DC Luxury Magazine’s annual Power Players edition.
A native of Alexandria, Virginia, Marcella is also deeply committed to service. She currently serves on the Washington, DC Board of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, an organization she has supported for nearly eight years.
She is also a proud mom, and when she’s not teaching, speaking, or leading her team, Marcella enjoys spending time with her family and pets, traveling to the beach, and diving into a good book.
