When Is The Last Time You Did Something For The First Time?

When is the last time you tried something new?

“New” used to terrify me. I strongly disliked anything different, any change. I loved the sense (and it was truly just a sense) of control I had over what I did.

Then one day, years ago, when I was reflecting back on my accomplishments and my most fun and exciting memories from the year I realized that they all involved something new that I tried.

Once I made this connection It was like my eyes opened to a whole new world of possibilities.

By no means am I an “expert” here … I still like to think that I am in control, and being in control in part means feeling comfortable, and feeling comfortable typically equates to not doing new things.

It does get easier though. It’s like a muscle. The first few times you work it, really work it, it is uncomfortable. You may be sore for a couple days, but the more you use it the better and stronger it becomes. The easier it is to use and push.

So now, I love to try new restaurants, I’m no longer adverse to trying new foods, and I love to stay at new resorts when my family vacations (keep in mind, they are usually at the same destination, but still … baby steps).

And so with all this practice in “little” things, trying new things in my business are now a breeze. I’m able to move forward confidently with new ideas, in part, because I’ve learned to trust myself. I know that if I try something new and it doesn’t work or it doesn’t fit, that I can change it. I can fix it. No harm, no foul. The best thing about it is that even if my something “new” doesn’t work out, I don’t end up going back to the old way, because trying something new usually leads me to a better way that I never would have thought of in the first place.
